I've been debating for some time now whether to create a blog and document the current chaos that has become my life, but I've been told by several people that it seems to be a really good outlet just for pushing something out there without the expectation of a response. Let's face it, a lot of people don't know what to say if you truthfully answer the question as to how you are, and that can be pretty accurate even for somebody who doesn't have cancer!
I think the key reason for me doing this is to raise awareness. We all know cancer exists, everybody knows somebody that has been affected by the disease. Whether it's your mum, an uncle, or a close friend. It's near enough shoved in your face every day. It could be through fundraisers, sponsored ads or on the radio on your way to work. You may not realise it, but you probably hear or see the word at least once a day. For most people, it could just be background noise.
Which brings me to the point in all of this. It can happen to absolutely anybody. I am one of the examples of this. I don't fit the traditional breast cancer check list. I'm not over 50, there's no breast cancer in my family and I am not a carrier of the BRCA gene mutation. Less than 20% of breast cancers are hereditary. So ladies and gentlemen of all ages... check yourself regularly!
